Abstract:

The Mongol invasions in the 13th century not only brought huge political, economic and social impacts, but have also remained unforgettable in the Japanese collective memory.

This talk discusses the political and economic challenges that Japan faced during and after the Mongol invasions and the construction and reconstruction of the Japanese memory of the Mongol invasions since the 19th century. It explores the creation and recreation of memories of the Mongol invasions and how these memories have contributed to mass mobilisations and identity formation in modern Japan.
