What do you get when you put calligraphy, dance, song, music, painting, wellbeing, books, exhibitions, photography, languages, trivia, gaming, and art together? An explosion of eclectic culture; a potpourri of interactive experiences; a multicultural festival with a difference…
Presenting the 2023 edition of Immersia: Engaging with Asia and the Pacific, all set to come to the stage on campus from 5 to 30 September!
Everyone across ANU and the ACT is welcome—the festival is fun, free and full of experiences that engage with the cultures of Asia and the Pacific.
Culture, Collaboration and Community
The vision behind Immersia has always been that of cultural immersion and community collaboration and sharing, so we look forward to showcasing the themes and subjects we at the ANU School of Culture, History & Language are well-versed in.
We are also proud to partner and collaborate with The Australian Centre on China in the World, the Student Research Conference, the College of Asia and the Pacific Regional Institutes, and the many student and cultural associations across ANU.
There is something for everyone, from storytelling for all ages as well as arts and crafts. Learn about Seoye, the art of Korean calligraphy; dabble in some Japanese calligraphy with special guest from Japan, Dr Noriko Tanaka; and experience the meanings and stories behind the traditions and cultures of our Elders with dot painting and cross-cultural workshops by Wiradjuri Echoes. Learn how to do traditional Manus basket weaving, cut up some yoga pants, or unwind with some tai chi for wellness.
Build your general knowledge with Asia-Pacific Trivia, or get competitive with some mah-jong! And for a Glimpse of India, shake a leg with ACT Desi and the Knights of Bhangra, or try your hand at some henna art.
And to transport yourself to Mongolia without actually getting on a flight, check out the Mongolian Landscapes photography exhibition and experience the unique Mongolian ger—a well-known gem that appears on campus for some time each year!
Other unique exhibitions include the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau Women in the Pacific Collection, and Illustration and Translation of Mexican Indigenous poetry to Chinese Mandarin.
Audiences will also have the opportunity to join our academics and researchers for book launches and discussions on varied themes such as Sanskrit verses, Kabir’s poems, art in teaching and learning, and what makes Korean historical movies so extraordinary.
