Sarah Johnston is an Australian consultant who has been engaged in Mongolia since 2006, primarily as Executive Director of the Institute of Education and Training (IET), a Mongolian NGO, since its establishment in 2009. For a total of 11 years she managed the Australian Government-funded training program to prepare more than 200 Mongolian students to study at Australian universities. Through these activities she has engaged personally with many of these candidates and awardees (before, during and after their Australian studies), as well as with key Mongolian academic institutions, such as the National University of Mongolia, the University of Humanities, University of Finance and Economics and Mongolian University of Science and Technology. She has also engaged with the World Bank, the Open Society Institute, the English Language Teachers’ Association of Mongolia and key private sector organisations, such as Rio Tinto and NGOs such as MEA. In 2014 she initiated the on-line Mongolia-Australia Language Learning Network (MALLNet), which now has more than 740 members in Mongolia and Australia. Her work in Mongolia has not only helped to build people-to-people and institutional links with Australia, but has also exposed her to many of the pressing issues concerning contemporary Mongolians. Her support for Mongolian education has been recognized by the Government of Mongolia: in 2006 she was awarded the Genghis Khan Medal for services to Higher Education and in 2022 the Teacher Excellence Award from the Mongolian Ministry of Education. She has extensive experience across a wide range of English language programs both in Australia and internationally.
